Mutton’s trip to Vigo, a trip to Oyster Alley

Having spent too much time trying to deal with the issue of my suitcase, I finally got down to the business of reviewing Vigo’s incredible culinary scene

First of all a Sunday lunch , a very important time in Spain. It was a pleasure to meet Muttonistas Jeff and Olga who had chosen to move to Spain from the USA, and we took lunch at the Meson Compostela , somewhere I’d reviewed back in the summer of 2021 in the covid years. This time , I varied from the all seafood meal I had beforehand.

I didn’t need to eat much all day after that. I did try a few bars that night , and was pleased to see Celtic music being performed in a pub. There wasn’t a huge variety of draft beer to choose from though ,Estrella Galicia being the local lager of choice, or a maltier darker beer 1906 , of which I had one, as I didn’t enjoy the flavour so much and to be honest I felt it was hangover juice. I was happy with Estrella though. we did have a snack of octopus , pulpo a la gallega , very much a local speciality. however unlike on the Friday and Saturday everything shut promptly at midnight on a Sunday

Oyster Alley (Rue da Pescadaria)

One of the highlights of my 2021 trip was Vigo’s oyster street, a street near the port with a number of seafood restaurants with independent oyster sellers. Dotted along the street are independent oyster sellers , you eat your oysters inside or outside the restaurant , order your bread wine salad or other shells from the restaurant but pay the oyster vendor directly. 12 oysters set me back €25 , quite good but not as good as the incredibly tasty flat shelled oysters I ate last time. Of course we ordered other shells from the restaurant, and a bottle of local godello white wine

I do remember as a child that fish and shellfish other than fish and chips to be prohibitively expensive, with prawn dishes containing few actual prawns. To a lesser extent that’s still true in Britain , but its all great value here!

One more vlog to come from Vigo with meaty fare and the return journey and the aftermath of the suitcase saga. but before then Wolves City and an alternative footy report from Birmingham.
